I have a love hate relationship with Smiley’s Yarn. I have bought from them a few times, both at their once a yearn Manhattan yarn riot and their Jamaica store. Every time I have been enticed by their low prices on yarn and every time, I end up buying yarn that I don’t like to knit with. I still have couple sweaters worth of yarn sitting in my stash (it is apparently so embarrassing that I have forgotten to add it to my stash on Ravelry) from my first trips to Smileys. I should have learned by now that I don’t like to knit with cheap yarn.
Having said that, I should have resisted going to Smiley’s Manhattan sale this year. But….. I couldn’t. I went, and on their first day too. I should be happy with myself that I only spent $33 though I was very tempted by the 100% alpaca yarn and by the 100% wool yarn. Sigh, I wish I did buy that wool yarn in a very nice heathery purple. But I was being realistic, cheap yarn=sitting in my stash forever.
This time, however, I am very happy with one of the yarn I purchased. Its Cleckheaton Merino Supreme. 10 skeins at $15 is a unbelievably good price. And it is machine washable. And it is one of the softest yarns I have ever felt. It could easily stand next to Malabrigo in terms of softness. Unlike Malabrigo, this yarn is tightly spun and plied so it doesn’t split while I knit it. Oh how I love this yarn. I have already started a sweater using this yarn. I only hope that I don’t run out of this yarn because I bought the last bag of it at Smiley’s.
